Hi, I'm Tom ✿ thank you for checking out my portfolio ✐ I am a recent interaction design graduate looking for a challenging job in the Randstad ⚡︎
As far as I know, all designers run into the same problem somewhere along their journey; when you have so many wildly varying experiences and skills, how should you present yourself to the world? What to say about yourself when there are so many things to care about, and man y ways to design for those things?
I have chosen to focus my attention towards four pillars: Digital design, Futuring, Social design and Inclusive design. These domains are reflected in how I organise my portfolio. Combined, I think they can express the values I hold and how I want to express them in my work.
Design constitutes a process of making change; of seeing and showing that things could be different. Within social design, I aim to apply the strategies and mindset of participatory design to enable people to think about and work towards the social and societal change they deem necessary. Through social design projects people can be made aware of the makability of the world (everything has been made up, everything could be done differently). Social design can thus become a tool for voicing the needs of minorities, for enabling democratic processes, empowering communities and moving towards just, sustainable futures.
The world often seems to be a messy clump of failing systems that is headed head-first towards disaster (or is it just me?). But, as mentioned, everything is made up, and everything can be changed. As a designer, I use futuring as a way to develop speculative other world that work differently. Not to predict or to dictate, but to show the breath of possibilities that are still out there. These futures can serve as tools to reflect critically on our own reality, or to think of pathways towards better conditions.
Many of the ideas and solutions I bring to life through digital means; in apps, websites or otherwise connected experiences in the digital realm. It is therefore under the name of digital design that I share the work that showcases skill in user experience design, visual design, graphics, motion and sound. But never without a solid origin of this work, be it a speculative future ora tangible problem.
In my digital design work I aim to create more inclusive spaces by considering the needs of the visually impaired and otherwise circumstances that need special consideration. Not only by applying WCAG standards, but also by getting in touch with users and being aware of their needs.
My journey starts at TUDelft, where I got a bachelor in Industrial Design Engineering. Here I learnt a methodological approach to problem solving and had my first encounters with user centered design and design research. In addition to the regular curriculum, I participated in the Honours programme, and the EyeOculus Project to deepen my understanding of design. As I gained some mostly self-taught skills in digital product design, I took on the job as the sole UX/UI (and sometimes graphic) designer at Docklab, a company that uses Web3 solutions to solve wicked logistics problems. Since then their design focus grew, as did the design team. I left in the summer of 2023, to pursue a master degree in Interaction Design at Umeå Institute of Design, which I graduated from in June 2025.
